scratching puppy
« on: March 30, 2011, 14:20 »
Hi my 13 week staffy won`t stop scratching, he was wormed and fleaed at the vets(2 weeks ago), his food hasn`t been changed and his bedding hasn`t been washed in anything new.
It started on his neck, which is now a little bit better but  now its under his `armpits`, he`s all red and sore now, booked in at the vets but any advice in the mean time, we`ve been using my daughters natural ezcema cream and he`s now got a t-shirt on to try and stop him getting to his sore bits, thanks :(

our Ollie was allergic to her bedding - she had a rash under her pits and her belly so we just put her on the bedding you can buy on a roll (the fluffy stuff that you can buy on  a roll), this cured her.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Sounds like an allergy to something, as has been said. Could also be mites, most commonly mange, which will not be controlled by flea treatment. Definitely worth a visit to the vet in case it is something that can be passed to humans. Good luck.

Mange can be treated with a spot on flea and mite treatment called advocat bought from the vet. Mange tends to appear on elbows and eyes amoung other places and the dog will start to bald. If the vet thinks it is mange they will do a scrape and tell you there and then it sounds worse than it is and it is easily treated so don't panic. It could be an allergy to something has the puppy eaten anything by mistake while on a walk etc? Or flowers from the garden?

Let us know how you get on Nicky

Are you still in touch with the breeder? They might have some ideas as they own at least one related bitch and they will know where the other pups are.

Thanks for the advice and info, the reason we are so perplexed is it started after his last lot of vaccinations but before his first walk outside so he hadn`t been in contact with other dogs, flowers or even other fabrics, very strange!
I have contacted the breeder and the mother suffers from a skin condition but only behind her ears not as bad as spikes and she uses ezcema cream, but will wait and see what the vet says on monday.

My dog did exactly that. Started balding and looking sore in places after her first jab and before her first walk. She had got fox to dog mange either from my garden or she was born with it apparently the mum can pass it on in pregnancy stage! The vet sold me advocate spot on and it's helaing nicely.

Good luck Nicky

Hi sorry forgot to update earlier, but yes took him to the vets, none the wiser yet but he`s got steroids to try and stop the itching for the next 2 weeks then back to the vets and if no improvement he has to have skin scraps and we`ll go from there, so no further forward yet but the steroids do seem to be stopping the scratching abit, so we`ll havbe to wait and see, will update when we know what it is incase others have the same problem, thanks

My collie did not scratch much as a puppie but he now has been having dermatitis on his paws for about 7 years now (he's 15).  he ends up chewing his feet making it painful for him to walk - let alone his creaky back & hips.  We found all this out from a dog immunologist that the vet referred him to and they were able to identify his allergies.  Unfortunately he is mostly allergic to dust mite - any asthmatics allergic to the same thing will sympathise with him I'm sure.  Over the years we have had to have countless courses of antibiotics, antihistamines, creams and shampoos. Interestingly he has only been on steroids once.  Not that you are in for a life of this I hope - just sharing the story but also to let you know there are specialists to identify the skin condition as well as the help you get from  your normal vet.

Hope the puppy is feeling better.     :)  and you because its hard when your pups not well.
Wash your hands, stay at home, distance yourself

every summer our Charlie starts scratching and it turns out she has an allergy to barley growing in the field which combined with the heat (she has a Newfoundland thick double coat) makes her scratch her back until it bleeds. so we now give her antihistamines at the first sign of a problem and get her fur clipped (which does make her look strange - a Newfie with short fur) and last year we had very few problems  :)
