Hello there, does anyone have any experience of a cockerel who has turned aggressive but just towards one hen. The hen is his mother but he is fully grown and has until today been very solicitous towards all his flock.
However he has just started attacking my buff orpington whenever she comes near to the flock.
All the hens seem healthy and are all laying well, it seems very odd.
Any ideas anyone?

try hugging him.
or holding him upside down by his legs.
show him, he's not boss.
you may want to post this is the hen house, so all the chicken huggers can offer advice.

Hi and thanks for the reply. I'm new to this so didn't realise I wasn't in the chicken forum!
Flash is not the hugging type. He's pretty neurotic and very in love with himself - he's a bantam light sussex. But I'm going off him rapidly over his mean behaviour.
his poor mum is all on her own now as she can't get near the rest of the flock. If he doesn't chill I will seperate him and he can see what it feels like to be on his own. That will also let me see if the other hens are OK with mum.

I know I'm not going to win any friends in saying what I'm about to say :oops: but I think we need a bit of reality check here and to get back into the real world. Hugging a cockerel is not going to alter how it interacts with another hen in the slightest.
If the hen is getting bullied, the two options are this as I see it. You seperate the two or you leave things as they are and hope that matters settle down.

Hi there, yes, I have to agree. I had to seperate him last night as mum was being chased out of the coop. So Flash went in the dog kennel and mum in the coop and none of the other hens had a problem with her. So it is just Flash having some kind of Freudian problem with his mother! Perhaps regression therapy might help to get to the root of the problem?! Or chicken pie?

Is he treading the hens? One of mine when he started realising he was a boy tried it on with the lower ranking hens first then when he got more confident tried it on with one of my higher ranking hens she didn't half give him a seeing to though!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

He's treading and also grabbing her by the feathers or comb and yanking her around. Very unpleasant.

Sounds quite normal to me :wink:
Bob Dylan (my Cockerel) is a bit rough on occasion, Crumb (goose) normally stops his fun though :lol: :lol:
