any idea what it could be

i have noticed over the past few days that one of my girls had what i thought wass poo on her back at the base of the tail feathers , and today i finally got to catch her { not for long though } and i noticed a cone tpye lump come up from between her feathers an to me it looked like pus she is moulting at the mo is it poss for a feather to be growing wrong under the skin to cause this :?: the lump was quite big i would say just under 1/2 inch tall.

i do have a freind coming over in the morning to help me with her as i wont be able to hold her an sort out what ever it is { looks gross

} and sorri could not get a pic but i will in the morning before we sort it out,. in a way i am kicking myself as i didnt check it sooner but i have learnt from this now its a case of if it dont look rite check it rite away.

They have a gland there I believe, perhaps it is infected, I'm sure someone will be along soon. Perhaps compare it with one of your other girls.

Nipped out and grabbed a hen

Here's a pic of a chickens preen gland - well I presume it's the preen gland, that's what it's called on the ducks

I know when I first had chooks I didn't know about it & it did look like an abscess.................

It may have an infection as you said:)

Best thing is have another look tomorrow give it a clean, if there is any puss there get her on some antibiotics

As a child, I was told it was the chickens oil can and continue to call it that to this day.
Next time you buy a roasting bird, take a look on the spine just below where the tail was.

oil can - good name for it

.i have looked today at the girl although without holding her an it dont seem as yuky as yesterday but i am going back out there shortly to have a proper look. but i noticed another girl 's one seems quite red around that area but shes also moulting pretty well so that could be why the skin seems redder. :?

Its perfectly normal, thats exactly how it should be. No infection there, just leave it alone.
