Best sugar snap peas.
« on: March 07, 2023, 14:30 »
I love sugar snap peas but am struggling to find a nice stringless and, more importantly, a flavoursome one. Have only looked at King's and D.T.Brown's so far. I'm planning on using our runner bean frame to support them which is about four plus feet tall. Having said that, if there is a good variety that fits the bill that is a shorter or a taller one because I want to grow for flavour rather than quantity.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If you mean sugar snaps that grow thick pods as well as having fat peas inside, then Sugar Ann is by far the best IMO. They grow just below - or just above 2ft, according to weather/soil conditions.

Gg, I am looking forward to the advice you get, as most of the time mine are just labeled "Sugar Snap" on the packet.  They are very good, cooked or raw (love them in a salad), very flavorful and tender if picked just when they start to thicken.

Sugar Ann sounds good, but I would like to find that quality in a plant that is taller.  My pea fences are also 4 feet tall.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding a choice of sugar snap peas so just ordered King's un-named sugar snap peas. Last year my OH made a frame for runner beans which did very well. As we still have lots of them in our freezer, am doing them instead of runners.

I did manage to buy them once from an American site on ebay, and they were good, but forgot to save seeds  and haven't been able to source them since, at a reasonable price. On Etsy

Grew Sugar Ann last year and they seriously topped out my 3' high netting such that I made a cobbled together "extension". Had to pick and eat/freeze frequently as they did so well. Direct drilled 5th May, first odd ones showing 19th May.
