Jars

If you're like me, and have just discovered the joys of making preserves but have not been saving your jars, you might want to check out Sainsbury's where 500ml jars of curry sauce from the basics range are being sold for 4p each.

In most cases I would feel terrible about throwing food out, however this stuff barely qualifies and it certainly beats paying a 50p a jar (not including lids) at Lakeland.

how do you get rid of the curry smell from the lid? I've saved all sorts of jars for re-use but with some I can't get rid of the smell of the original contents on the lid.

try bicarb in water in the jar, secure the lid then turn it upsidedown and leave overnight.

I have to admit I'm using them for chutney rather than jam, so the spicy smell isn't so much of a problem.  I'll give the bicarb tip a go though, it sounds like a great idea.  :)

:tongue2: bleargh! The sauce has got to be something vile!
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Great tip! I'll get a few, tip the contents into a plastic container and give it to someone I don't like! ???
Suppose I could stick it in the comfrey tub, might improve the smell!

I suspect it's mostly leftover miscellaneous vegetable lumps from other recipes liquidised and spiced to within an inch of their lives.  It's very yellow and it has sultanas in it.  For some reason it reminded me of school dinners.   :tongue2:

I don't need the jars, and I certainly don't need the curry :tongue2:  But I am tempted to buy a jar just to see what it can possibly be in there at that price

I've just been to Sainsbury's and got some of the curry sauce - I checked, and it doesn't quite glow in the dark, but it's a very odd colour. We ended up with a group of us chatting about the price, contents and using the jars, and the lady behind me went off and got herself half a dozen!Thank you Wombat!

Great tips in this thread, I think I'll pop around and pick up a few jars...

I'm pouring the contents down the drain, mind, I don't fancy consuming 4p curry sauce.

Not fair !
Went to 3 supermarkets, and best I could find was 400 ml jars of tomatoes at 66p, at Aldi.
So now Ive got rasps, sugar, pectin and no jars.
Bought myself 6 packets of crisps instead.
