« on: March 20, 2013, 17:51 »
Hi guys can any one recommend a good brand to buy of a spade and fork nothing to expensive. I won't bother with the essential or value brands,  but what about wilkos stainless steal one I've seen these about £15 are they  any good or will they snap quickly
Gardening is a matter of your enthusiasm holding up until your back gets used to it.  :-) :-)

Buy the best you can afford.

Hopefully the offer is still on, get yourself along to Wyevale, if there's one near you & join their garden club.

It's buy one get one free on Joseph Bentley long handled tools and you'll get yourself two crackers for under £30 total.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Carr Gate Garden Centre, just off Junction 41 of the M1 is a member of the same group and your nearest by the look of it.

My spade, fork, draw hoe, dutch hoe, and rake are all Joseph Bentley, purchased from Wyevale on the BOGOF deal. Amazingly well constructed bits of kit, and well worth the money.
I may be Welsh, but I love ewe anyway!

I have always used bulldog fork and spades, not cheap but well constructed and made in England, there again it all depends on the usage and type of ground you are cultivating.

Whatever you go for, check the guarantee. Mine have a lifetime guarantee, which was handy when my plot bent the fork tines...the replacement is holding up well, not that there's been much chance to use it so far this year.

Joseph Bentley only have a 25 year guarantee. I suspect in my case that's a longer than lifetime one!

Bit of a generalisation but if the digging is heavy or you are going to use them to prise shrubs out of the ground best to avoid stainless as it can be brittle.

The OP did say nothing too expensive and with the Garden Centre Group offer you can get both for less than half that.

Well sorry just given my opinoin.

And i would not call it exspensive when you can pay £100 for a spade alone.

Maybe us mortals should just listen to the moderators then and keep our opinions to our selves.
