I usually start in March but I believe it can be done earlier. I don’t have a greenhouse but have a kind of out room at the back of my flat which is not heated ( so quite cold) and has a large window. I’ve noticed some people on the plot start early but not quite sure how they do it. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Here. I find the best time for sowing is at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb. I sow mine in a cold greenhouse, so as long as your 'out room' has enough light you should be fine.
The last few years I've sown mine, 2 seeds at a time, in cutdown small water bottles  (saved years ago) They make nice long roots, in those   
They don't like being soaking wet, but as usual, make sure they don't dry out completely.

Thanks mum that’s great advice. I imagine your conditions in Kent are similar to here so I’ll go for it in about one month. Happy Christmas!

That was a good question and answer.  I have some bottles laying around, would toilet rolls do as well.  I think I shall give them a try.  regards,  Mrs Bouquet

Hello scarify the seed first to let moisture in ,use a sheet of Emery paper folded with the seed in between and lightly rub the seed  jezza
