Title: Penstemon and verbana bonariensis pruning question

What should I do about pruning my penstemon and verbana bonariensis?

Do they need cutting back to the base or just tidied up?

I cut the penstemons down to about 6 ins and cut all the long stems off the verbena bonariensis - but not until the weather warms up a bit more.
