New pekin chick
« on: August 06, 2013, 14:01 »
I bought a Pekin trio about 4 weeks ago and they are probably about 13/14 weeks old, they have settled in nicely. Last Sunday my grand-daughter bought a Pekin chick younger than the ones we already have and I have put her in a cage alongside the others. How long do you think it will be before she can be put in with the others? The cockerel seems interested in her but I am afraid the other hens will peck her ???  :(

Welcome to the site Strawberry Jam.

You don't say how young the new chicks is.  With any new birds it is always best to quarantine them for around three weeks to make sure they are not carrying any unwanted visitors or illness.

I had a baby pekin and two older ones recently.  I put one baby with one older one so they could work out pecking order one to one first. Then when they all seemed like friends put them all together.

One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

Definitely quarantine it to start with. By keeping it in sight of the others for a a couple of weeks they will be used to her and as you have a cockerel they usually help to keep the peace. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
