re-using potato compost??
« on: August 02, 2010, 11:47 »
Hi all, I have grown new potatos in big sacks this year and they are nearly ready to harvest.

I was wondering what to do with all the compost i have gradually added? There is quite alot of it as i have 4 sacks and it seems a huge waste to just throw it away. Can i add this to my raised beds? or is there a risk of contaminating my already good soil with blight??

Cheers for all your help
Mickeyboy :) :)
new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

Blight can only surive on living plant tissueand seeing as you don't have it anyway, it seems, there's no problem from either front.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I re-use it with no problems- just check you haven't left and small potatoes in or you will be pulling potato plants out when you weed your beds
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

I reuse mine as a mulch in the other beds too.

I'd be inclined not to spread it on a bed where you intend growing toms/spuds next year, just to keep any semblance of crop rotation in order.

If you have a lot of green stuff in your compost bin/heap use some of the soil as a brown addition to help the compost to rot down. Just make sure it's damp when you add it to the compost heap.

I aim to get 2 crops at least from my tattie sacks. the first, first early sacks now have peas and french beans growing in them but you can also put radishes in followed by CCA lettuce. Then you can spread as a mulch or put on the compost heap. If growing another crop add some BFB or general fertilizer.
