overwintering tarragon
« on: January 08, 2020, 12:33 »
I am a tarragon newbie. If you grow tarragon outside it dies back in winter and the advice is to cut back the dead foliage and store in a frost free place. What happens if you bring it inside into the kitchen before the first frost? Does it die back or can you continue to harvest it?

From my vast experience (I have one pot of tarragon!) it is a perrenial that dies back at the end of every year, whether you want it to or not. I think the flavour of the herb fades as the year goes on, so its best to use the ice cube method of storage when they are young. It's a great herb and I mean to split it every spring to get more plants but never seem to get round to it!

OK so from my reading you can bring tarragon inside after it has had a cold spell and died back. It will think that is spring and start growing but where should I put it?

Some websites specify not to put it on a sunny windowsill but somewhere where there is lots of indirect light. However other sites specify that it should be put on a sunny windowsill. Confused

Has anyone got experience of growing it indoors?
