Dreamed up this idea in the middle of a sleepless night and wondered if anyone had seen / tried / discredited the idea ...

1. Cut both ends off of a 3litre plastic milk bottle
2. Dig or otherwise prepare your plot
3. Position bottles (top up) and fill with soil to give an added 8 or 9 inches on top
4. Plant parsnip, carrot, salsify, anything that likes to go really deep

Milk bottles strike me as being better proportioned for this purpose than, say, 2 litre PET drinks bottles.  Cutting away enough of the top gives a reasonable catchment area for rain too.

That'll work Munty but knowing how much you loved salsify, I was trying to come up with something you hadn't tried!

Seriously mate, I am totally in awe with the knowledge and ideas which you've got.  Even more impressed by your willingness to share 'em with us all.

Got that one covered.  You've got a whole block of these for smaller crops, self supporting, or tied with twine.   Parsnip: maybe a double row or leave alternate ones unplanted.

whisky this seems like a lot of work all those plastic bottles if you want raised beds just get 4 scaffold boards and nail them in a square or rectangle
