Know your onions?
« on: May 09, 2007, 17:41 »
I sowed a packet of onion seeds in mid april and to my knowledge they have all come up, little green shoots everywhere, what is the next stage for them? also they are a large variety [the name escapes me for a moment] so how do i look after them through this summer and next autumn until its time to plant them out? :?  :?
If you cant be a good example then you must  be a horrrible warning........

To sit on the fence is not an option

i think you should have planted them a bit sooner lizzy, try and thin them out asap into bigger pots on there own and plant them out when they have there 3rd or 4th leaf,(i planted mine in the ground last week)i dont think there going to be big ones this year but you never know
feed the soil not the plants
organicish

Agreed, they will need transplanting ASAP.  If they don't make it to a usable size this year, it might be worth trying to overwinter them for a crop next year.

Onions are pretty hardy & Crediton doubtless gets pretty mild winters.  If you do this, watch out for any sign of bolting next year & remove flowering stalk as soon as it is evident.
