Dressing a virgin plot
« on: November 03, 2007, 22:17 »
Righty ho then.  As of next month I will have a large plot that has been nuked, napalmed and rotovated and I figured that a good way to spend the colder months and getting exercise would be to level, make beds, paths, manure as appropriate and maybe even get shedding sorted out.

Now, ideally I would have a ready supply of suitable driftwood and tremendously shabby chic stacks of planks, doors, roofing etc. but in truth I need to get myself equipped from fresh.

Do I nip to the building suppliers (B&Q, Wickes, etc) and get a certain type of wood for my beds and spanking new shed?

I really want the 'foundations' sorted so I can get cracking on the growing.

Advice grandly appreciated (calling rent-a-munty  :D )

depends on what you mean by foundations cat .. do you have the money to spend on concrete base .or will you stand the shed on sleepers or slabs or even bricks ... the beds can be planking ,even old pallets will do for them .just strip them into planks an use old oil and white spirit to preserve them allow to dry off a week or so and they wil be fine to handle .. this should take you some time .,you can also install your shed and have gutters feed into water tubs ,,  make the foot paths  using the same wood to edge them,, hows ta for a starter,,, oh and your pallets will also make a decent compost bin

I believe brucesgirl had a load of pallets she couldn't shift and she's in your area.

I acquired a load of old floor joists from a colleague in work that I used for raised beds - 12' long, 10" wide and about 4" thick.  All they needed was a coat of wood preserver.  It might be worth you looking around for someone renovating a house locally.

The floorboards he got rid of now make up my compost bins...

wow that's really good - recycling in action; much better than going into a skip and then into landfill or whatever!

Even if we haven't got them still (I think the landlord made us burn them), we are always getting more material in on them, so if you want some we usually have them.

That sentence doesn't really make any sense does it? But you know what I mean.
