Can anyone help me to find Quince
« on: November 23, 2009, 22:36 »
Hello .. I am new to the site and sorry to say I am not lucky enough to have an allotment :( I am looking for the fruit Quince for a special gift for a friend who would love to make a preserve from his grandmothers recipe... Can anyone help me to find some ... I am hoping someone will have a tree or know someone else who does... Or a supplier where I can buy some ...

Very grateful for any pointers

Do you have any National Trust places near you.  They might have an old tree there and might be willing to let you have some.

Apart from that you could ask on Freecycle or Freegle if anyone has got any they can spare.

Hope that helps.

I'm sorry but you are getting a bit late.   :(  Mine have all fallen and are in the compost already. (only because I'm not allowed to make jellies this year; too many in store and the builders.  Reasonable but frustrating  >:( ).

Hello and welcome. It might help if you tell us where you are.

I have a small one, which self setted a couple of years ago. If your local you can have it.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

I made our quince marmalade in September, from fruit bought at a local greengrocers, and off a local tree.

You sometimes see Turkish quinces for sale in markets, middle eastern stores and even supermarkets (at least Waitrose has had them) much later than the English crop.  They are much larger than the British grown ones but do not have so much flavour.

Around here it is just a matter of keeping your eyes open for them.

Cheers,

Gillie

They were selling some at Wisley at the beginning of November.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Where are you based? I've seen a lot of them growing on country roads in east Wales! Scrumped quite a lot when I drove past three years ago. I guess what I'm saying is keep your peepers peeled.

Pops was a rural postie and would often harvest the windfalls (with permission) of customers that only wanted them for ornamental purposes. I guess if you've got the brass you could knock on doors.
