Title: To cover the run,or not?
Post by: funky chicken on May 20, 2009, 16:12
Our girls will be living in what was an outside flight for 30ish budgies till a kindly soul broke in and let them all go.GRRRRR >:( (note to self, lock up at night)
The area is slabbed and has a plastic roof,we are planning to put the hen coop in there so that the girls are locked away at night, and also have a covered shelter for rainy days. The Hubster is going to extend the run onto what is currently grass, not for long I know so that they have an extra 7x8 ft,so they'll have about 15x8 altogether.
Will this be big enough for 3/4 hens and do we need to cover the new bit with a mesh 'roof'.
We are not planning on leaving them in the open run when we go out,and the existing flight has a gate, bolt, and will have a padlock on it so that they can potter about in daylight hours when we're not around.Although it's rare for there to be no-one home at all.
It's mostly our foxy friend that worries me,although after our budgie experience we are much more security concious :(

Sorry,a flight is the outside 'cage' where the budgies flew about during the day,its an outside aviary if you like, the size of a med/large shed

Helly funky chicken,
Welcome to the Forums.
Sorry to hear about your budgies.
Depending on the height of the extension, it is a good idea to have something over the top.

Our run is covered by corregated clear plastic and weighted down by bricks in the corners.  It works a treat.

We bought an offcut of butyl pond liner, cost £8 it won't rot and because its quite heavy it hangs over the edges with no problems, just put a few bricks on the hold it when very windy.
