Anaemic looking broody
« on: June 02, 2009, 09:11 »
Hi folks, I am looking after my second broody, the first just did it all by the book she sat came out once or twice a day, ate and pooped and looked healthy. This time the lady in question is having to be pushed out to eat and exercise and as it's so hot I've given her extra water close to where she is sitting. We are day 10 and her comb and wattles are looking very pale, is there anything I can safely give her to keep her healthy. She is on mixed corn and has access to grass (when I can prise her off the eggs).

Have you checked her and her house over for any creepy crawlies P/F ?

I sometimes put a bit of poultry drink in their water made by battle's, contains iron & phosphorous, says on label "helps maintain good condition and appetite", I've not had a problem yet :)

Thanks Vember, I've given her the poultry drink, known here as "pink drink" and I made sure she was treated for beasties before she went on the eggs and the house is new. I often see posts about giving chickens catfood when they are looking weary, is that a good idea when they are broody though?

I have given cat food to a broody with no problems, poops and stuff still the same :) I also give them a few mealworms as a treat (because they're so good ) :D

The other thing one of my broodies is doing at the moment is sneaking in with the baby cochins and pinching some of their chick crumbs before scurrying back to her eggs ::) Again doesn't seem to be doing any harm :)

Had a good look yesterday but I will check again, I can't really empty out to treat the house while she is sitting though even if I did find anything. I've always used spray for spidermite and powder for lice, can you get powder for mite as well?

I reckon it would be easier to do powder without upsetting my first time broody.

You would have to get to the darkened spots to find them. Wait till night and have a look with a torch, they may be easer to see.
