Ventilation advice
« on: September 12, 2012, 13:12 »
I have just had a new coop and run made, (only 6 months or so into chicken keeping and my first coop wouldnt have seen a winter through)...the question I'd like to ask and its never really clear in the books I've read, is about ventilation and draughts... My new coop is watertight, has ventilation holes at the top, and airflow gaps where the roof meets the top of the coop walls....now, there is a 10mm gap running down my access door for the coop, and a 10mm gap running down the side of the pophole....would this not cause a draught for my girls...do I need to fill this...my set up is a coop with integral run that has a roof, so it is fairly sheltered.  Just get confused knowing that they need good ventilation, yet a draught can kill.

Who made the coop for you?  Can't you ask him/her why they've left these gaps down the pop hole and access door?

Doors and pop holes should fit well to the frame of the coop.  But it shouldn't be you having to 'fill' gaps.

Draughts can kill your chooks, but if you think that it is sheltered enough, then leave it.  But I would certainly want to know why the builder has left gaps like that.

Thanks GrannieAnnie.  I know I cant mention company names on here....it was a local firm who specialise in animal housing, field shelters, dog kennels etc....throughout the building of the coop, i have been messed about with phonecalls not being answered, 3 week delivery turned into 8, to the point that on Sunday morning, I dismantled the old coop and the girls were moved into the front garden, (now also trashed!!! but they loved it!!!!), for delivery at 11am, and it was 1pm before he turned up...thought he wasnt coming and was close to tears! I know I wont get anywhere by ringing him, so other than this, I am pleased with it.
I just wanted to check if the gaps should be there, and if they shouldnt, at least i can put a piece of wood down the side.....think with what you've said, I will give him a ring.
And as i said before i have found the information about ventilation and draughts very confusing and almost contradictory at times.

I know what you mean about contradictory info in books and on the internet.

Many people write stuff in books from info they have received from others, or even copied from other books or the internet.  Best info we ever got was from the professionals when we were breeding and rearing our own birds.

The top vents and air space will give your chooks the ventilation they need as warm air rises, so that will rise up and flow out the spaces.

An open pop hole will give a draught, but at night you close it, so the draught won't be there at night when the chooks are inside.

Don't worry about a bit of cold in the winter though.  Joyfull had about 14 birds at one time that nested in her trees all year, often hopping down in the morning still with frost or snow on them!

Your coop builder sounds like a man we have down here.  He makes coops and field shelters, and he is the same.  Let's everyone down, I wonder if they are related? lol  But I would at least try them to ask why the gaps are left.  Tell them that you can't recommend them to anyone else if you are not happy with the coop yourself!

You might be able to put a deflector  or diffuser (wooden/plastic strip) over the offending gap to stop direct draughts in winter but still allow lots of air into the coop.
