Curly runner beans
« on: July 18, 2013, 23:26 »
We have picked a few runner beans this week from Enorma which seem to be growing curly is this normal?
Heck, yes,  I'm SHORT.  God only lets things grow until they're PERFECT. Some of us didn't take as long as others  :-)

Mine vary, curly and straight.  But once through the cutter they all taste perfect.

Certainly worth buying a cutter - works brilliantly for curly beans :)

I couldnt even get enorma this year to grow past curly seed leaf stage.
I changed variety in the end.

I am thinking of investing in a cutter, anything to make the job quicker

Beans sometimes grow curly if they suffer a little damage in the early stages, for example from blackfly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would love curly beans I'm not getting any to set yet, the fliers just bloom and then drop off

It's not at all unusual for the first flowers to drop off, especially in hot weather.

It sometimes seems as if the bees are a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to runners, but they always get there in the end. Keep the plants well watered.

Individual beans will always curl if they happen to come up against an obstruction as they grow, which is why the Munty frame is such a good way of growing them.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Oh no, no - that cuts the beans at completely the wrong angle
They have to be cut across to make diamond shapes, the way my mum taught me
