Comfrey press problems.
« on: July 08, 2009, 20:16 »
My Heath Robinson comfrey press is having problems.  :(

Its a soil pipe with a flower pot tray stuck to the bottom with silicone and a 10mm hole in the middle. Its a little rough but not bad as a prototype.

The problem Im having is the 10mm hole keeps getting blocked, this causes the liquid to seep out of the pipe around the silicone and go to waste feeding the weeds around the press. I've tried enlarging the hole, poking the stuff out of the way and also putting a layer of gravel on the bottom. All worked for a while but the pipe always blocks in the end.

Any Suggestions ?

... have written that I wonder if a wad of debris netting at the bottom would be better than the gravel.

Hi, i have a bucket with a little pipe at the bottom, i just put some large pieces of brocken pots over the end as long as the end of the pipe is covered your sound.

Mine is a drainpipe with a small flowerpot on the end - the flowerpot sits in a drainpipe clip attached to the shed.

I have old vases underneath to catch the gunk; and when it needs cleaning I can shove the drainpipe up and remove the pot and empty it into the compost heap right next door.

Took me a while to come up with the design, used silicone at first but the pot fell off during the winter.

I have one for nettles right next door to the comfrey one.

Doh! Just got back from lottie - will take a pic tonight and post it for you.

ETA: Taken 2 piccies, one of them both and one of the bottom of the pipe so you can see how they are fixed to the shed.

My Dad filled a black bag with comfrey and then just strung it up from the roof of the shed.
He hung it over one of those water cooler bottles and cut a hole in the bottom of the bag for the juice to go into the bottle.
He went on holiday for 3 weeks and when he got back there was about a litre of juice in the bottle.
Nil smell.  :)

Nothing at all, until you have to empty the gunk out - best wear gloves but I'm hoping if I leave it over winter, and just chuck the stuff that comes out of the bottom onto the compost heap, then emptying will be minimal. Where's the 'dream on sunshine' smilie???
