Feeding ducklings and ducks
« on: June 01, 2011, 09:07 »
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if ducks and ducklings should have food available all day as do hens or should there be particular feeding sessions?
Thanks

I'd say all day, as they would feed as and when like in the wild.

BUT I don't have ducks  :D, though if I did, that's what I'd do.

My ducks live a semi-wild life with open water to swim in and plenty of land to roam over so i feed morning and afternoon in the winter  and once a day in the afternoon in the summer.  If i had food  about all the time it would  just be eaten by wild birds and other nasties which i dont want to encourage  >:(
So i would say a lot depends on your situation. :)

Our 4 Kaki Campbells have as much free access to food as the hens during the day and in the afternoons when I scatter mixed corn I put a nice big scoop of it into their paddling pool as they are much less pushy than the hens and I think that this way they get their fair share. When I close all the birds up for the night I tip the water from the ducks paddling pool and there is usually a greedy hen waiting to get the last few grain the ducks didn't want who gobbles these up and then retires to bed. You could do this method in a shallow container to.
