Chicks and wood shavngs???
« on: May 22, 2011, 14:09 »
Hi can anyone help??

i have just read that you shouldnt put new chicks on wood shavings because they eat it and it blocks their digestive systems.

Can anyone tell me if this is true, has anyone had trouble with chicks eating it?

Well I can tell you that local gamekeepers here, put their pheasant chicks on wood chip and I wouldn't have thought they would do this if it wasn't safe. I'm not saying, however, that this problem has never occurred.

ours were on sawdust and were fine (the breeder had recommended it) never saw them eating any and cant think why they would if nice chick crumb is available

I have always used wood shavings and never had a problem with them eating any. Only once did I swap to newspaper as I read the same as you and ended up having loads of trouble with toe balls. I swapped straight back to wood shavings and have been problem free since.

also heard that some people cover the wood shavings with an old pillow case to prevent them eating them when small

Yes we used to use old pillow cases, sheets and duvet covers depending on how many chicks we had, but for this past year, when I put the wood shavings down, I walk all over it with those over shoe things you can get so I don't contaminate the shavings, and when we put the chicks in the brooder, I put them straight onto the trays we put their chick crumb in for the first few days.  they start eating the crumb straight away, then when they walk onto the shavings, it doesn't interest them.

I used kitchen roll for the first few days this has an advantage over newspaper in that it is not slippy and you avoid spraddle leg. Then I went onto wood shavings - by this point they understand about eating and chick crumb. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

If I've only got a few chicks, I too sometimes use kitchen towel in the brooder box for the first couple of days, and I've just bought a roll of corrugated cardboard which Solway feeders people use to make the brooder rings up.

They say you could use that on the brooder floor too as the chicks wont slip.  So I've got a bit in my brooder box, but only had 1 lot of chicks on it so far.
