How to look after my butternut squash?
« on: July 27, 2011, 20:08 »
Evening all

I've got 4 plants which are growing like mad, just says HAWK F1 on the packet.  I've not had any flowers yet and I'm worried that I should have had some by now.  I've watered them every day but other than that I've just left them too it.  Is there anything I need to be doing?

Thanks
Beth

you could try feeding with some tomato fertiliser, it encourages flowers and fruits.

Hi there,

It sounds like your in my plot !!!!!

Exactly the same here i'm affraid.

I've had 3 squashes off about 3 weeks ago. They started really early and ended up about 6 inches long.

Since then the green has just gone wild but not much in the way of fruit and flowers as yet.

I checked this morning before coming to work, and there is some life starting to appear. I have been feeding 2wice per week with tomato feed and i have bought one of them irrigation hoses for the frame i have them in.

Wait and see i guess.

If no joy this year, i reckin something else will be taking it's place next year !!!!!

Last year my BN squashes only started flowering* mid august and we had a good crop  :D

* female flowers that is. Plenty of male ones earlier on  ;)

Hoping the same is true this year

Down here on the arid desert of Romney Marsh, mine are going mad.

Lots of flowers and fruit  :)
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................

Thanks Sunny, you've put my mind at rest there!

All my BNS,turks turbans and pumpkins are producing loads of female flowers, but no males...at least none that are opening. As a result they are not getting pollinated and all the fruits are rotting off :(...........hopefully still time though...and the growth is simply rampant,be nice to see a few fruits swelling though.

Funny really that the turk's turbans and potmarrons that were sown and planted out at the same time and in the same bed as the butternut, are all going great guns   ::)

No accounting for these plants imho
