Adding Compost
« on: July 28, 2011, 12:59 »
Forgive a fundamental question from an allotment newbie, however I am wondering on applying to varioius veg on my plot, some compost which appears nice ready in our bin. Is is sufficient to simply sprinkle around the base of a plant? Any advice most appreciated

It's usually either dug in to bare ground in autumn/winter or can be used as a mulch around plants where it should help to suppress weeds* and conserve moisture (worms will eventually pull it into the soil.)

In either case it's best regarded as something which improves the soil structure rather than as a fertiliser as the nutrient levels tend to be quite low.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Can I just add that if it is going to be used as a mulch, you do need to mkae sure the gorund is good and damp underneath, as otherwise the mulch might stop any rain from soaking right through
