Weed Identification
« on: July 21, 2010, 16:18 »
My Neighbour has an invasive weed that he dug up last year but has come back with a vengeance on the next plot to mine.

We are concerned it may be Japanese Knot weed.
Attached some photo's.

Can it be identified and what is the solution to eradicating this problem

Any advice most appreciated

I don't think it's JKW.

The edges of the leaf should be a more continual curve, coupled with the fact your friend managed to dig it out.

Here's a link to a piccie:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As far as you can be 100% sure about anything it's not Japanese knotweed!

My guess is coltsfoot; I get it in my garden and pull it out or hoe it off (it always comes back because it can regenerate from the broken taproot like dandelions do!)

It's not a big problem for me, but it looks like a good candidate for the glyphosate treatment to me if you can spare the ground for a month or so. Otherwise you will have to dig it up trying to get all the roots out!

Sorry to hijack but thanks JayG as a young child growing up in the 50/60's in a Lancashire village  one of my favourite treats was coltsfoot rock. Now I know where the flavouring came from.

You can easily check if it is coltsfoot. The young leaves have a fine white layer over the surface which you can rub off with your finger and it rolls into a kind of thread
