Title: Cheap hot chilli seeds???
Post by: mickeyboy on December 04, 2009, 22:14
Hi all I would like to grow some really hot chillis as we use a lot of them for thai, indian, cury blah blah.. The problem i have is they seem to b very expensive, so much so i cant afford them after recently being made redundant.

Can anyone advice me of a good place to get these at a reasonable price?

Thank you all very much for your help

Kind Regards

YES

Go to the supermarket or your local indian shop and buy a couple of scotch bonnet chillis ow whatever hot ones they have.

Take them home and dry them (hang them up on a bit of cotton somewher dry and warmish) until crispy

Crumble up and take out the seeds

Cheap as chips   ;)

I was going to say much the same except that I would have used the chilli in whatever and planted the seeds without the drying.

As they will be basically an indoor plant I would have said start them off anytime, keep in a decent sized pot and keep on a bright window until the weather is warm enough then place outside.

I have some saved chilli seeds, I can send you a mixed lot with different heat levels to try.
Just send me a stamped addressed envelope. PM me for address.

Remember to over-winter them if you can (recent thread available on this) - mine are flowering already (not sure if this is a good thing!).  Saves the tricky germination problem too (I had v poor germination rates last year).

And treat 'em mean when you have got them going!

I'm not very good with really hot chillis but have been disappointed in the past with insipid chillis so this year I followed the advice on here about not over feeding them to make them extra spicy. Only grew some middling varieties (cayenne and jalepeno) and they were fab and spicy!

Sow then around January?February as long as you can keep them warm and give them enough light. Plant outside once frosts are finished. Keep potting them on, keep them on the dry side and you should have some decent sized plants come early summer.

Seems a long way off doesn't it ::)
