Can you explain these instructions to me
« on: April 17, 2008, 20:52 »
I loved the advice last year from someone who told me to imagine someone stood on their heads and pinch out anything that grows from their arm pits for side-shoots on toms.  So I am hoping someone can do as well with these!

Cucumber Superbel F1

Pinch out:

side-shoots from first 4-6 leaf axils.

Eh??  :?  :?

I know what leaf axils are but I never in my life pruned or pinched any cucumber and never grown any green house ones, so have no clue what you do to them and for why, someone will be along shortly, I'm sure. :)

I didn't do anything last year either, however I had lots of potential cuks just go brown and drop off.  I thought it might be due to my lack of all this malarcky!

I did also have more than more whole family could eat so I'm not too sure why I am so bothered about losing a few!   LOL!

I don't bother with those instruction either usually, but I think there's the central stem, and leaf axils are the side branches, so you pinch out the side shoots of the first 4-6.

then you get a more bushy plant?  I did that last year, but I had more and better cues the year before, when I didn't do anything to the plants at all!!!!!!

Grannies right you pinch out the side shoots at the 4th - 6th leaf axil, dont pinch out the main stem!!!

Okay I think I understand!  Leave the top until it gets to the roof.  On the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th branch take out the side-shoots other then that leave well alone.

Ahh no, just pinch out every side shoot 2 leaves after a female flower that's easier   A female flower has a tiny cucke behind it

I don't stop mine when they get to the roof I just let them grow.

I don' t pinch cuke stems at all either. They meander everywhere and act as a nice mulch for everything else, though it can be a trick to always find the cukes.
