replanting garlic
« on: February 07, 2010, 14:40 »
I'm sure others may have this problem too - have tried a search, so sorry if it's been posted before.
My garlic has appeared at last, only problem is the roots are barely in the soil, it looks like it has been forced upwards, ?probably by the frost heave?
Anyway, do I need to dig new holes, push them back in where they are or cover them with a ridge of compost or what please??? i don't think it;'s birds as there's no sign of damage to the shoots,
thanks

Been wondering the same thing although it is only one variety that has done this.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Garlic are better planted 3 inches deep so I would replant them with a trowell. This can probably wait until the weather improves and the soil is in better condition. Replanting would be no different from starting in pots and planting out. The important thing is that your garlic has started growing and is developing its roots.

Be careful not to just push them back in as the soil underneath will compact and hinder further growth, as well as the possibility of damaging the roots.

Salmo's suggestion sounds good, as soon as the soil is workable again  :D

Thanks, that's what I was wondering as I din't want to damage the roots - I did plant them fairly deep, but didn't firm them down, lesson learned!

It is frost upheaval that pushes them up. I get the same thing regardless of how deep I plant them. I'm lazy and simply hill up a bit more soil around the bulb area, which actually helps drainage. Garlic likes moisture but never soggy bulbs.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Is it still ok to plant garlic now ? I hear they should be planted in Jan so the cold sets the clove to produce a bulb.

yes - can still plant and with luck and good soil get reasonable bulbs.  I was late getting my plot last year so planted at the end of April and still got reasonable bulbs in August.
