Title: Replanting gooseberries
Post by: nataiva on September 27, 2015, 11:32
Hi everyone,

last year I moved allotment site and took my gooseberry bush from the old one with me. It was a good established bush which previously produced plenty of fruit. I replanted it in October last year. It looked fine in the new spot but this summer gave me only 5 (!!!) berries. Would it be because it is newly planted or it simply doesn't like the new position? My neighbour's (2 plots away) bush was so heavy with fruit yet mine... Do I need to get scientific and buy soil testing kit to check where on my plot it will grow best and then replant it again or give it another season and see what happens next year? Maybe it does not like being planted next to rhubarb?

Whould be greatefull for any suggestions.

If you moved it, it will need a season to settle and re-establish the root system. The plants do that at the expense of berries. Give it a good mulch of manure/compost and I bet you'll be rewarded.

I moved a couple of very old bushes from Mum's in Feb. I got very little fruit, but the bushes are now HUGE so looking very good for next year's crop.
