Drying Leaf Edges On French Beans
« on: June 22, 2010, 17:02 »
As a new grower of vegetables (fruit) I would be really grateful if anyone can advise on why the leaf-edges of potted Dwarf French Beans are going dry, brownish and on some curled. They are facing south, getting watered and have also fed with tomato feed. Any help/suggestions appreciated

I am just guessing here, but are you watering over the whole of the plant in sunny weather? If so it is likely that your plants are getting scorch from the sun.

A good point, I'm trying to water near the stem/root, possible some water has got onto leaves, although I water during the morning while there is some shade. That said your suggestion does make sense. Any other possible causes??

Has it been windy where you are? It has been very windy here and the edges of mine are dried to a crisp, and I don't know if they will recover :(

There's been the occasional gust in darkest Sussex, do you think that may also cause the leaf to dry-out?

I have lots of dried withered chard leaves today, my fault I suspect as I soaked them last night and the sun was HOT today  :( My beans which were watered carefully are fine though

BQ I'd have thought that they would have dried sufficiently overnight to avoid scorch today?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It happened to me on some peas - It coincided with a really cold North wind - so I put it down to that.

If you're watering last thing at night the plants can hold on to the moisture resulting in a slight dew on them.  If the plants are then catching the full sun first thing in the morning without time to dry off first that could cause scorching and drying.  This would also happen if the wet leaves were then subject to a fair wind.
It's like with frost, those that get the first sun are usually more damaged by frost than those that stay cold all day.
