My dad has a minorette (apologies if spelt wrong) apple tree which has got really tall and he wondered if it was okay to lob off the top and seal it at this time of year (May).

Anybody got any ideas.

It would be better to prune when the sap is down in the winter but if needs must after all you can cut a hedge and it will keep growing

i would prune in winter when the tree is dormant

also cut all but 7 main branches and then no more then 7  fruit bearing feeder branches,

same for plum trees but plums need trimming in late summer

There is no reason why you shouldn't prune in summer. Pruning in winter will give lots of woody growth, and probably means you will need to prune more, whereas summer pruning will encourage fruit development. You should not prune hard.

There may be a reason for the tree growing big. Have someone been feeding it for example?

Sealing is not really beneficial, as the plant will not be able to grow over the cut.

Most of the pruning info for minarettes suggests they should be summer pruned
