Poundstretcher - fruit bushes and shrubs
« on: January 17, 2013, 13:40 »
My local poundstretcher has a range of shrubs, fruit bushes and roses for £2.49 or 2 for £4.  Gooseberry Hinnomaki Green/Red, Redcurrent Jonkeer van Tets (spelling?!!),  Blueberry Patriot, a Blackcurrant variety I didn't recognize, an unnamed raspberry variety and tayberry.  I bought two Blueberry 'Patriot', both about a foot high and will take a while to reach cropping stage, but when cropping size plants are £15-£20 at the garden centre, I think I can afford to wait!

Take the plant out of the packet to check before you buy though, as they were a really mixed bunch, some very weedy & some of them were dead!  Also, if you aren't familiar with the plant type don't rely on the information on the packet - I think the care information on my blueberry was based on raspberries as no mention of needing acidic soil and I was told to tie it in to a trellis and prune after fruiting by cutting out all weak and old canes!

I've just been and bought 9 rasberry canes from Wilkinson's for under £10 which I thought was good value. I just need to get the allotment into shape so they have somewhere to go :-) ::)
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!

You get better pollination with more than one plant but they don't have to be the same variety.  I had one each of two different varieties for years and had really good crops from them.
