Potato plant 'fruit'
« on: August 16, 2011, 00:03 »
I noticed today at the allotment that my main crops have started to produce tomato like fruit once the flower has died away.
I googled it and it seems the 'fruit' is poisonous but can be picked and the seeds harvested - has anyone done this?

Thanks
Claire

Personally I can't think of why anyone would want to. Plonk them on the compost heap is my advice.  ;)

I heard on GQT that removing the fruit at an early stage will actually have a positive effect on yields. Doing a bit of weeding yesterday I noticed some quite large "fruits" on my Desiree. Bit late now meethinks.  ???

They are a bit of a nusiance (more to clear up after cropping). I still think I'd plonk them on the compost heap.  ;)

the seeds are useful only if you plan to develop a new variety of potato as they can take years to develop into useful spuds. I too toss them into the compost pile as they're otherwise useless.

This was asked on the local radio gardening show this week.  Apart from the fact that it will take years to develop, the chap (who lectures at the local horticultural college) said that he wouldn't risk it owing to the possibility of continuing any disease inherent in the plant.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
