No Brussels sprouts
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:41 »
I planted my Brussels sprout plants at the end of last summer and they grow very tall but we are now in March and no Brussels sprouts. Will the plants produce sprouts this year or have i done something wrong. Should i dig them up and start again this year?

Might sound a bit daft, but are you sure they are sprouts? I had a packet last year that was sprouts but then turned out to be cabbage, they must of mixed them up at the seed company.

You were very late in planting brussels in late summer, mine went in Late May, if you can afford to leave them in (space wise) then do so, you never know you might get something or they might just go to seed.

Even if planted in late August there should be sprouts that have formed by now, me thinks either someone is nicking them or they aint sprouts.

Could it be "walking stick" kale? It grows very tall, apparently, but obviously won't give you any sprouts.

How tall are your plants?

I think they are around 40 to 50cms tall.

I've only seen photos of walking stick kale and it's much taller than that, so your plants are obviously not giant kale.
