Aldi Fruit Trees ?
« on: February 18, 2010, 11:23 »
Anyone know what root stock is used on the Aldi fruit trees in store today?

I've just bought three but there's no indication on the pack.

TIA

Send them an email or give them a ring - they can be suprisingly helpful.

I have an apple tree that is about four years old, I moved it last year and the root was pretty much the same as when planted so I assume they graft on a minature rootstock.

What are the benefits of knowing which rootstock was used?

Its the rootstock that governs the size of the tree as below
M27 1m (3ft)
M9 1.6m (5ft)
M26 2.3m (8ft)
MM106 3.6m (12ft)
MM111 4.5m (16ft)

It is the rootstock that determines how big they will grow.  Click here for a little table I found, scroll down to find it.

Thanks for that, so really its quite important.

If you do contact them I'd be interested to find out too, would be helpful in deciding where to plant them.

on the pack it says the trees can grow between 3 to 10 metres depending on variety and pruning...

still... not complaining at the price!

If anyone does find out the rootstock I'd be most interested in knowing

From past experience of these Aldi fruit trees, can anyone tell me when I can expect to get fruit off the plum and cherry trees I bought yesterday?

Lidl are selling fruit trees aswell, two for £10

they state they grow to aprox 1 metre tall. and are two years old.
i wonder if Aldi source there trees from the same supplier.

I will be giving them a go, if all goes well they will be a bargin

"aprox 1 metre tall..."

don't think that's right.  Anything between 2-8 metres depending on the rootstock is more likely.

An apple about a metre tall sounds like an M27 rootstock to me.  These are very weak growers that need staking for life.  Commercial growers like them because they come into bearing quickly and can be picked without using ladders etc.  They are planted very close together and are usually grubbed up within ten years.  They might well suit allotment growing but you really do need to know what rootstock you have got!

hi, im new here  :)
i think the ones lidl will be selling are 1mtr tall when you buy them ,pretty sure thats what the leaflet said-very much doubt that is the height when full grown.
im gonna get a couple of pears or plums, hopefully for my plot.
