Is it lime?
« on: October 16, 2021, 12:08 »
Been given a bag of Thomas Elliot “material”, problem is there’s no label so don’t know what the contents is. Very fine powder first thought it’s lime but could be grass fertiliser ? Any tests to determine what it is?

Is it in a large bag, for example, or a smaller box?

Do you have access to a pH test?  Lime would be very alkaline.

Sulphate of iron can be white and powdery, and can be used to control moss in lawns.

I can't immediately see anything on the website which fits the description.  Thinking about the person who gave you the material, do they have a large lawn, or none, or are a big veggie fan, do they grow brassicas, why did they give the material away?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

{Sorry, edited, I thought Yorkie started this post}

JMCKG, a quick test you can try (outdoors) is to put a small amount of that material (teaspoon or less) in a clean glass jar.  Add a tablespoon of vinegar.  Does it fizz?  If so, it is likely ground limestone, or something containing limestone.

Can you ask the person that you got it from what it is?

If it were me, and I couldn't figure out what it was, I would consider binning it instead of using it.
