Spinach germination
« on: May 09, 2020, 09:07 »
Hi

I have done three batches of spinach so far, but after a week they whilt and die (indoors my my kitchen with a stable 20c).

I have just planeted a new batch which has come up after a week and don’t want to make the same mistake.

Any tips?

Picture of current batch today.

They're chronically short of light - need to be much nearer the window (I'd suggest moving them outdoors during the day if we weren't in for such a cold snap.)

Spinach isn't really something which needs to be started off indoors - it should germinate and grow perfectly well outdoors.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have a greenhouse. Would you suggest that for today.

Then with a colder snap coming, would I still keep them in the green house ?

Yes, put them in the GH today - after that you could bring them in at night until they strengthen up enough to be able to cope with the lower temperatures forecast for the next few days.

I have been trying to get baby leaves for salads growing. Even indoors under lights it’s way behind the stuff direct sown outside under fleece in March. It doesn’t like being inside, I reckon.

They need light from the start, not so much heat.

Pop them high up in the GH, or even outside under some sort of clear protection, and they'll work well!

Also, we found old seed didn't do much either, so it's really a new packet each year here!
