Potato plants dying....
« on: July 22, 2013, 17:42 »
My potato plants (casablanca) are dying, the tops yellowing and the tatties are the size of pebbles! Any ideas?  The weather has been warmish for the north of Scotland, but the ground isn't that dry and I've not watered them.  The cabbage plants and celeriac are doing well, along with the strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and red currants. At the end of the tattie rows, the last two plants are doing fine and have not yellowed.
Last year the tatties didn't come to much. The ground has been well manured with well rotted down horse dung and tattie manure.
I dug up two plants and just got enough tiddlers to make a meal!

Should I get the ground tested?

Help needed.
Thanks
Upnorth

Have you checked for blackleg?

Lot of posts about it this year, here's one:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When were they planted?

Casablanca are supposed to have good resistance to blackleg.

No sign of blackleg, just checked the plants. Just yellowing stems that are dying and baby tatties beneath them. One plant at the end of each row (same end, near wall) are growing fine with no signs of dying. At least the tatties that are there taste good and I like peedie ones!
