This will be my first full year growing after a late start last year. I decided that it would be easiest to order my seeds all from one supplier rather than split the order and decided on Suttons.
Having now received the final part of the order I have to say I am a little dissapointed in their service and quality. Is it just me being over picky or does anyone else feel the same.
1. The packet seeds themselves were delivered in dribs and drabs so it was hard to keep track that I had everything.
2. My seed potatoes were delivered in early November, way too early.
3. Having today had my onion sets delivered I have had to discard 40g out of 200g because they were soft or rotten, in my calculation thats 20%.
Be interested to know what others think.

Have you contacted them with your problems ?
-
never had any real problems with any seed supplier but fully agree you shoud complain in clear terms and require them to replace the items you feel are unsatisfactory.
It is their interests to do so but they can't put things right unless you tell them

Hi Many thanks for your comments.
I have sent them an email tonight with regards to the onion sets so I will see what they say. Having not purchased these items before I just wanted to know what others thought.
Regards

Most reputable companies are keen to put things right as their reputation depends on customer satisfaction.... they ought to send you some more sets TBH :)
-
I know some people have to resort to mail order and have no choice, but I for one would never buy seed potatoes or onion sets this way - always buy from a local source direct or (my way) from the allotment association shop (by shop I mean the shack on our site!! btw you dont have to have an allotment to belong to an allotment association, well as far as my one is concerned)
I do buy mail order for seeds etc IF I cant find exactly what I want. Any reputable company will want you to repeat order so they will always sort any problem out without hassle, after all they want your dosh not just once but every year!!

Suttons are usually the supplier against which others are compared?
-
I am sure Suttons will be fine with it all I was just disappointed.
I find mail order easiest for me. I can no longer drive and live in the middle of nowhere. I hate relying on my husband to take me to the garden centre as he hates the places and does enough for me anyway. He created my veg patch for me so I have somewhere to potter on my good days.
Will let you know what happens

"Suttons are usually the supplier against which others are compared?"
I agree. I know its a matter of personal preference, experience, and "feel", but Suttons have always been my preferred supplier (I hear many voicing much the same about T&M, but my experiences with them have not been good - horses for courses ...)
But I'm talking more about the results from growing their seed, rather than online / mail-order experience.
I can't imagine what they are doing shipping spuds so early ...
... and I despair at the multiple shipments. I ordered a clutch of items from Amazon a week ago and judging by the "We have part-shipped THIS" emails I will get about seven separate shipments, which I think is shocking (from an environmental perspective)
-
I got an email today from Suttons saying they will send me another supply of onion sets, so thats good. they were very apologetic and promised to look into the early shipping problem.
Kristen, I know what you mean about seperate shipments, I receive 4 letters today from the tax people, all from the same office, all posted on the same day all in seperate envelopes - 4 stamps instead of one no wonder these agencies don't have any money!

Glad to hear Suttons are making good with the onions sets :) :)

I'd be tempted to measure other seedsmen against premier seeds direct, lots of varieties and good deliveries.... though I don't think they do spuds and as I don't buy onion sets I've never bothered looking for them.... they trade on ebay.....

i recieved my onion sets yesturday from dobbies, after reading your mail i checked them this morning and have also found that half of the sets ars soft which are no good at all, so i have done the same as you and e-mailed dobbies so heres hoping for a result.
-
Hi Dannie, glad my posting had some good outcomes. I hope dobbies are as forthcoming as Suttons.
-
Any problems I have had with Organic Catalogue (on-line) have been responded to promptly and rectified completely; the company I would compare others to.

-
That's two happy people then :D

I have dealt with dobies for a number of years now and find that they are very keen to have satisfied customers so let them know they will get it sorted. William is the guy I speak to if he is still there. Good luck.
-
Hi Dannie, glad to hear that. My new pack arrived this morning and they are much better. Guess I'll have extra onions now this year!!!!!
-
I was very pleased with Thomson and Morgan this year for my seed spuds, but dobies are cheaper so far. Im going to split the difference and see how I fare...but leave enough time just in case. Sadly I dont know of any local seed spud suppliers, so Im keeping an eye on the sticky

hi angela, yes thanks to dobbies for being so understanding, it is a good sign of customer care as it is the first time i have ordered from them . will certainly use them again though and i too, like you will have extra onions this year , thanks to you as well for the topic which i read in the first place. happy Christmas xx
