Title: Help, need to fix my mattock back onto handle!
Post by: JuliaPen on May 16, 2010, 20:51
Hi all, my lovely mattock lost its head yesterday. We have tried hammering small pieces of wood to take up the slack between the head and the handle but no joy.

Can I do anything to temp fix it?

Normally the head just slides down the handle and seats itself, your handle must be very worn
You really want drive your wooden wedges into the business end of the handle, not between the handle and head, which I guess you have been doing  :)

Or a new handle

I'd go for the new handle. You don't want it flying off in mid swing above your head.........

Tap the head down as far as possible until it's as tight as you can make it. 'Working' it will tighten it further. If it's still loose then soak in a bucket of water - the wood will swell and lock things in place.
