introducing young chickens
« on: October 27, 2013, 21:28 »
I have been offered 2 Rhode Island red chickens that were hatched about 14 weeks ago.
I think this would be too early to take them. I have 7 hens at present and have seen some brutal bullying
when introducing hens previously. Was thinking about taking them in another 4 weeks.
Will they be old enough then?.

You are best to have them in quarantine for 2 to 3 weeks but in sight of your flock.  This will give you time to make sure they are not carrying any ailments or lice/mites.  This also gives them time to adjust to seeing the new pullets which should make integration easier.

Your other consideration would be that they would need to be on growers pellets until they begin to lay.  This would be difficult to control if they are in with the others so the older they are when you get them the better.   :)

Hi ANHBUC. I phoned about the chicks today. They are living in an uncovered run on a farm with no coop and are hardy.Tin sheets to shelter under if raining.
I have been asked to take them this week, they will be ok in the greenhouse until I introduce them to the others.

Do be careful that they don't panic and break through the glass.  You might be better screening it off so they can't see out and get spooked.  Would it be fox proof?  Take care that the humidity is not too much for them as that can cause lots of respiratory illnesses and would be ideal conditions for Coccidiosis.

ANBHUC is right and also even though there is not as much heat in the sun it could get too hot when the sun shines! 8)
