Blackberry Jam
« on: August 27, 2019, 08:01 »
I have a lot of blackberries on my plot and I'd like to have a go at making some blackberry Jam. I don't know if I'll like it but if not I know my nan does and i'm hoping the process will be roughly the same for any berry fruit.

Does anyone one have a step by step guide, from picking the blackberries to sealing the jars?

Thanks
Ches

Val to the rescue  :D

This is her guide from the pages on the main site.  John and Val (site owners) also have books on the subject, but they will probably be too modest to plug them

I did it. Although they seem to be quite runny still. Will check again in the morning.

Well done, I don’t like the pips so after I’ve stewed the fruit I sieve it out 😊. You often find it once it is properly cold it thickens, blackberry is usually a good setter. A good jam thermometer is worth it although the old plate in the freezer works just as well to test setting point or methylated spirits, but I’m never sure with that one 😂

I didn't have enough blackberries so I used half blackberries and half raspberries. More foraging on the weekend I think. I do plan to get a decent jam thermometer and i'll try to sieve out the pips next time. Sammy doesn't like the pips either.
