Title: Watering Spikes (Uses Empty Water Bottles)
Post by: pookey on April 12, 2007, 21:41
I have quite a few containers and lousy water pressure - my hose pipe gives a tiny piddle of water.  I seen some IRISO WATERING SPIKES in a catalogue, they fit in the top of a 2 litre plastic bottle and form a spike so the bottle can be turned upsode down and inserted into the soil, then it has a dripper that can drip 150ml-1.5 litres a day.  They look fantastic but atr £4.99 each - very pricey.   Does anyone have any ideas on cheaper alternatives or home-made versions.

I cut the bottom off a 2 litre pop bottle drill a small hole in the lid, push top end into grow bag, etc fill with water, if it emptys too fast just drop a bit of soil or small stone in.

Thanks everyone.  My only concern is the bottles blowing awawy when theyre empty and littering the area.  I will give it a go though.

Well put some grit or gritty sand in.

I got some of those spikes cheap at an auction and thought I'd hit the jackpot. But the darned things drained right out soon as they were in the ground. So much for the slow drip action that was advertised.
As for the empty bottles, either do the wire trick that someone showed earlier or put a rock on top.
