chicken skin
« on: February 23, 2008, 16:41 »
hi
i am hennypenny and am new to the forum.
i have a question about one of my chickens.
She has lost quite a bit of plummage around the rear end and some on her underside(tum)
she was a bit mucky around her back passage, so i trimmed this all away,
since then(about 2 months ago) she has been very red there it looks like burnt skin.
where i didnt trim on her tummy is also bald and very red.
she shows no signs of listlessness , runs round with the others , eats and drinks plenty and is laying.
there is no sign of this on any of the other chickens , no signs of lice or any form of mites, their nest boxes are barley straw and they have a sand box to dust in.
this redness is between the legs on the body and round under the tummy about as big as the palm of my hand.droppings firmish.
Any help or advice would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks hp.

Your hen sounds fine and the skin may well be red if there are no feathers there.  Did you trim them to leave the feather stubs on her ?

I would spray her skin with some tea tree, you can get it from pet shops and it is very soothing.  She might not regrow those feathers until she moults

Hennypenny, I have exactly the same thing with one of my Sussex hens. She was only bought a week ago, but I didnt notice her bear botty till we had got her home. She seems very well in herself, eats well etc, so I will take Aunt Sally's advice and wait till she moults. I dont know if whe will let me catch her to bathe her behind with anything, but may have a go. The rest of her feathers are fine by the way.
