puppies in the bin
« on: February 07, 2011, 15:15 »

well on my way home from helping a friend we passed a wheelie bin and heard the pityful wimpers of a bag full of puppies .
so my friend held the bin and i turned the other one over and jumped in and there they were ,5 ,old pups so got them home and warmed up and fed still having all the stufff from the last time , sadly one died in the night but the other 4 are thriving hope the dog lady can home them as we are returning to uk in march .

The Greek attitude to dogs and cats is really bad, and despite the best efforts of a few wonderful animal centres doesn't seem to be improving, alas.
Some of the things I saw while out there really mad me cry, and there doesn't seem much you can do to change attitudes. The best I could do was to round up a few feral cats each year, get them neutered and let them go again...........one non greek vet used to 'do' them very cheaply for me.
Greek vets, by and large, don't like neutering, so people just chuck puppies and kittens out to fend as best they can, and also the old dogs, rather than have them put down they leave them to die in the olive groves  :(

Have to admit the worst thing about Greece is their attitude towards animals. I've never seen malicious cruelty, but they certainly do things differently.

On two separate trips to Samos, the owner of our favourite taverna proudly took us to see the family smallholding. We were horrified to see the way the animals were kept. but he was very proud and caring in his way, and to be fair, all the animals looked well, but they were on concrete/earth floors with no bedding and very cramped and although clean, were very smelly and dark. We knew what to expect the second time but the couple who came with us were speachless.

They looked after me well though, Mum was always sending specially cooked vegetarian goodies for me to try. Any I really liked were put on the menu.

I hope you manage to get someone to take the puppies for rehoming Chrissie. Good luck.

So sorry Chrissie, at least you gave them a chance, which is more than someone did. Any idea what they died of?

Good luck with the other two.
