Dirty Eggs
« on: February 07, 2010, 21:39 »
Hi,

We are getting two to four eggs most days from our six hens, most are laid in the nest boxes with the occasional one in the coop.

About half the eggs are dirty, while I know it makes no difference to the taste, is there any way of cleaning them ?

The nest boxes are clean as the birds don't sleep in them and the coop is cleaned weekly and all the shavings replaced.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

im new to this but i believe cleaning the eggs is a no no other than waiting till dirt is dry and just brushing it off.
i personally think it reminds you that your eggs are fresh and free range :D
One light Sussex , two bluebells, two white stars, two speckled stars , two cream legbars.

I think if your nesting boxes are clean then the eggs should be clean unless they're standing on them with mucky feet. I put some Aubiose or Hemcore down at the entrance to the coop to try and keep things clean

If the eggs do get a bit of muck on them wipe it off with straw or with your thumb  :). If that fails I use a bit of kitchen paper barely moistened.

I think generally they should be clean if the nesting box is clean. Pick out poos daily and refresh the bedding very regularly as they like a comfy seat  :)

You are not supposed to wash your eggs if you sell them.
If they are dirty or you wash them they then become class B eggs.
