John Innes and vermiculite for me. Don't go through enormous quantities so cost isn't much of a consideration.

2 Years ago I regularly swept the Hatfield peat works near Doncaster, spending 6 hours at a time watching the bags coming off the production line. The same line filled bags for some of the most popular names in the market-without changing the contents according to the staff there....

Thanks everyone.  I'll give New Horizon a go.  Maybe mix in a bit of sand or vermiculite as suggested.

Have used Homebase own brand  4 for the price of  3 very successfully for the last 2 years. Not sure whether it's peat free or not though ???
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

Westlands Multi. I've used it for years with no problems whatsoever.

I picked up a bag of B&Q multi last week and absolutely full of slug eggs.  :(

Compost seems of a reasonable quality, certainly better than the wickes stuff I bought last year.
