The comb on one of my chickens is looking a bit crusty, its looks dry and crusty.  She has just been moulting a bit and looks pretty unhealthy .  its not a red as it used to be, kind of pale. does anyone know what it could be?

Hi Shazzer

Is there any chance you could pop a photo on, might give us more of an idea :?

I'm pressuming with her moulting that she hasn't laid recently :? A hens comb will go paler when she is not laying :)

Sarah :)

you need to get a Photobucket account I think, upload your pics to that then copy and paste the link into here.

Some sad people, not me of course   actually rub vaseline onto their chickens combs when they show them. It wouldn't hurt at all to try that.

I did that to my chooks first winter I had them.  It was in theory to stop them from getting frost bite - It made them look like 1950s spivs with their hair Brillcreamed back

Can you imagine a free range farmer with 1000+ birds doing that each morning

I digress -  Their combs do get rather dry and scruffy when they moult.  They soon perk up though :D
