We got some of these and  they have grown really big, but not got any buds? How long does it take for them to bud or do you do anything to make them bud? They have grown the size to about 9" but no buds. What have we done wrong?

I would expect African Marigolds to get a fair bit bigger than that before flowering.

French Marigolds would flower that small ...

It's the first time we've got these, so we don't know

The ones we had a couple of years ago grew to about 2 feet high, so if yours are like this I wouldn't expect any buds yet a while
