feeding our piggies.
« on: March 29, 2010, 14:49 »
Hi,

We have two saddleback piggies aged about 10-11 weeks. They are having pignuts and some scraps from the kitchen. We are being quite careful what we feed them but i wondered if anyone had any advice or experience on what is good and especially if something is bad. We know citrus is supposed to be a no no, and obviously meat. They were not interested in the leek, so maybe onion's not good?

Luckily we eat a lot of apples and my kids have saved all the cores each day!

Regards

Michelle

You should avoid things that arent good for humans in the main eg salt.

Plus

fodder beet tops and rhubarb leaves (oxalic acid is the culprit)
green potatoes
Cow parsley
onions &  leeks
peppers
Ragwort

Bizarre, but you shoulnt feed parsnips. They supposedly cause mouth blisters and may be linked to miscarriages.

I have also heard that cooked/dried mushrooms are OK but not raw

I watched a youtube video about a gal in a major city who kept pigs and she often raided the tips of her local fish shop for the guts and other parts. Seems her pigs adored them and grew very large but it disgusted her whenever they'd chow down and look up with fish guts hanging from their snouts. Later in the summer, she scavenged a produce supplier's tip and the pigs ate a lot of binned peaches and fruits, which they also adored and she said it gave their meat a wonderful flavour.
